Being Indian

I don’t know much about politics, but someone suggested this to me the other day and I’d like to get other opinions.

You know how the history books say, and most intellectuals agree that modern India wouldn’t have come about had it not been for the British. That it was their contributions in terms of introducing a universal language and the railways that united people of different tongues from the North to the South. That if it hadn’t been for the British then India would still be small warring kingdoms. Of course they did so for their own ends, but that isn’t relevant to this argument.

Well, with the heritage that each part of India possesses in equal measure, wouldn’t it be just a matter of time before the kingdoms signed treaties, political and economic, realizing that their good lay in peace. And if we were left alone by imperialistic forces for this to have happened, we would probably have something akin to the European Union now.

Would this not have been a better situation? Not just economically, but in the sense that each state then would truly have a cultural identity, a true identity, not one imposed like the national identity that was imposed (I know this is a hard word, but I can’t think of a better one) on the populace after independence, which was of course essential to build the Indian Republic.

And the question then arises of our national identity. Do we really have one? Are we Indian? Or are we Maharashtrian / Tamilian / Sikkimese / Bihari first and then Indian?

Would love considered opinions, no kneejerk reactions please.

I like that speculation about the little kingdoms becoming a union. quite possible... but it most prolly wouldnt have happened before we had long bloody wars... some of them running into years perhaps.

But the scenarion looks tempting... a single union with a single identity under one flag...but then we have what we have...and we got tomake the most of it...

i still say we need to have a benovelent dictator at the helm.

well, the rival kings might have signed treaties, but that would only have served their own purpose and wouldn't have benefited the people in any way.

Frankly, I can't imagine what we'd be if it weren't for the British ... the two most important things they did for us were Education and a Legal System. That we are still following laws enacted during the Raj (like the IPC)and continue to copy their laws even today (like the Companies Act) is testimony to the fact that without them we'd have been one big mess!

Sure, they took their pound of flesh, but there is always a price to pay for everything.

And if what they managed to do in a tiny strip of land like Hong Kong is any indicator, I say we'd have been better off with them still around.

I don't know about the first question you asked, but I do most certainly know this: I am NOT a mallu first and Indian second. I am proud of being a mallu, but I am more proud of being an Indian. Despite the language differances, despite the allegations of favouritism towards Hindi and its speakers, I love my India (cliched as that sounds).

How many times have we had the chance to introduce ourselves saying "I am ******. I am an Indian."? Not many...but every time I did it, it felt great...much better than saying I am Tamilian/Punjabi/whatever.

A bit late on this, but have you read "The Idea of India" by Sunil Khilnani? He has some of the answers and a lot more questions ;-)

Hey read ur post.. lil too late may be. Good thought. But you think that would really work?? Isnt it the reason that one king wanted to win over the other and took help from british, that they became so powerful. It was people of India who made them strong. I strongly feel something like wat u said would never possible in this part of world. Europe ?? Hmm the story totally is different. :)
